How Chords Are Built From the Major Scale

Have you ever wondered why some chords naturally belong together in a key?


For example, why does the key of C major contain the chords C, Dm, Em, F, G, and Am? And where do those chords come from?


The answer is the major scale.


Once you understand how chords are built from the notes of the major scale, you'll have a much better understanding of keys, chord progressions, songwriting, improvisation, and music theory.


In this lesson, we'll build the chords of the C major scale step by step and learn the pattern that works in every major key.


What Is a Major Scale?


A major scale is a group of seven different notes arranged according to a specific pattern of whole steps and half steps.

The formula for a major scale is:


Whole – Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Whole – Half


For example, the C major scale is:

There are no sharps or flats in the C major scale.


Each note in the scale is assigned a scale degree:

The first note is called the tonic, or 1st scale degree.


But how do we get chords from these seven notes?


Building Chords From the Scale


The basic idea is simple:


Start on a note of the scale and stack notes in thirds.


In other words, take a scale note, skip the next note, take the following note, skip another note, and take the next one.


Let's start with C and build a C major chord:

So the notes in a C major chord are: C – E – G. As with the other chords we will build, there are only 3 notes. No more. No less. However, if we are playing the scale up the neck on one string, we cannot play these three notes harmonically, meaning simultaneously, so we will have to move the E note to the B string and the G note to the high E string.

And that's a C major chord.


Now start on D:

That's a D minor chord.


Next, start on E:

That's an E minor chord. Notice that the notes built one upon the other in the chord look like a snowman.

Again, when building these three-note chords, or triads, you skip a note between each chord tone rather than using consecutive notes from the scale. In other words, you’re stacking notes on top of each other to create a “snowman.”


The process of building the remaining chords from the C major scale continues in the same way.


The Seven Chords of C Major


When we build a triad from each note of the C major scale, we get:

Notice something important:


The chords have different qualities.


We don't get seven major chords. We get a combination of major, minor, and diminished chords.


The pattern is:


Major – Minor – Minor – Major – Major – Minor – Diminished


Or, using Roman numerals:


I – ii – iii – IV – V – vi – vii°

Uppercase Roman numerals indicate major chords, while lowercase Roman numerals indicate minor chords. The small circle indicates a diminished chord.


This pattern is the same in every major key.


Why Do Some Chords Become Minor?


This is one of the most important concepts to understand when building chords from a major scale.


The quality of each chord isn't something we randomly choose. It is determined by the intervals between the notes in the chord.


An interval is the distance between two notes. Intervals help us describe how far apart notes are from each other and are used to determine the sound and quality of chords and scales.


For example, take the ii chord in C major:


D – F – A


The interval from D to F is a minor third, while the interval from D to A is a perfect fifth. These intervals give the chord its minor quality, making it a D minor chord.


Now look at the V chord:


G – B – D


The interval from G to B is a major third, while the interval from G to D is a perfect fifth. These intervals give the chord its major quality, making it a G major chord.


So, when we build chords from the major scale, the notes of the scale determine the intervals, and the intervals determine the type of chord we get.

The Pattern Works in Every Major Key


Let's try the same thing in the key of G major.


The G major scale is:

The actual chords have changed because we're in a different key, but the pattern remains exactly the same.


Why Roman Numerals Are Useful


You might be wondering why musicians bother using Roman numerals instead of just naming the chords.


The advantage is that Roman numerals describe the function of a chord within a key, rather than just its letter name.


For example:


C – G – Am – F


in the key of C can be written:


I – V – vi – IV


Now suppose we want to play the same progression in G.


Instead of figuring everything out from scratch, we can use the same pattern:


I – V – vi – IV


In G major, that becomes:


G – D – Em – C


The chords changed, but the relationship between them stayed the same.


This is one reason understanding music theory is so useful for guitarists. You're no longer just memorizing a collection of chord shapes. You're understanding how the chords relate to one another.


Common Chord Progressions From the Major Scale


Once you know the seven chords of a major key, you can start recognizing common chord progressions.


Progression 1: I – IV – V


One of the most common progressions in popular music is:


I – IV – V


In C major:


C – F – G


This progression is common in rock, blues, country, folk, and countless other styles.


Progression 2: I – V – vi – IV


Another extremely common progression is:


I – V – vi – IV


In C major:


C – G – Am – F


You've probably heard this progression in many songs.


Progression 3: ii – V – I


If you're interested in jazz, you'll encounter this progression constantly:


ii – V – I


In C major:


Dm – G – C


The ii chord leads to the V chord, which creates tension that resolves to the I chord.

Understanding where these chords come from makes the progression much easier to understand and use.


What About Seventh Chords?


We can take this idea one step further.


Instead of stacking three notes in thirds, we can stack four notes to create seventh chords.

Using the C major scale:


C – E – G – B = Cmaj7

D – F – A – C = Dm7

E – G – B – D = Em7

F – A – C – E = Fmaj7

G – B – D – F = G7

A – C – E – G = Am7

B – D – F – A = Bm7♭5


This gives us the diatonic seventh-chord pattern:


Imaj7 – ii-7 – iii-7 – IVmaj7 – V7 – vi-7 – viiø7

This is especially important for jazz and other styles that make extensive use of seventh chords.


Notice that as you play through the 7th chords up the neck, not all of the stacked-third voicings are practical to play. Some, such as the Dm7 and G7, require awkward stretches that can make them difficult to play comfortably.


However, the major 7th chord voicing built with stacked thirds is a common and useful voicing. This shape is frequently used when playing major 7th chords on the guitar.


Here is a more practical way of playing these chords up the neck:

This is one reason why understanding the mechanics of the guitar is so important when writing out guitar parts. The second example demonstrates a more practical way to play these chords up the neck, using common chord voicings instead of the more difficult and impractical stacked-third voicings shown in the first example.


The second example also demonstrates how the notes from the stacked chords can be rearranged while maintaining the same chord spelling and overall sound. This allows us to create more playable and practical voicings without changing the underlying chord.


Why This Matters for Guitarists


You don't need to memorize every possible chord to become a better guitarist.


Instead, start learning to see the relationships between chords.


When you know the major scale and understand how chords are built from it, you can:

  • Understand which chords naturally belong in a key

  • Learn chord progressions more quickly

  • Transpose songs into different keys

  • Understand why certain chords sound good together

  • Create your own chord progressions

  • Better understand songwriting and harmony

  • Begin analyzing songs instead of simply memorizing them

  • Make more informed choices when improvising


This is especially useful when you're learning songs. Instead of seeing a progression like:


C – Am – F – G


as four unrelated chord shapes, you can recognize it as:


I – vi – IV – V


in the key of C.


That's a much more useful way to think about music.


A Simple Exercise


Take a major key and write out its seven notes.


Then build a three-note chord starting from each scale degree.


For example, try the key of D major:


D – E – F♯ – G – A – B – C♯


Now build the seven triads.


You should end up with:


D – Em – F♯m – G – A – Bm – C♯°


Then identify each chord using Roman numerals:


I – ii – iii – IV – V – vi – vii°


Try doing this in several different keys.


You don't have to memorize every answer immediately. The goal is to understand how you can figure it out.


The Big Picture


The major scale is much more than a scale you practice up and down the guitar neck.


It provides the raw material for building the chords that belong to a key.


The basic process is:


Major Scale → Stack Notes in Thirds → Build Chords → Create Chord Progressions


Once you understand this concept, things like chord progressions, Roman numerals, transposition, and harmony begin to make much more sense.


And that's the bigger goal of learning music theory: not simply memorizing rules, but understanding why the music works.
