Introduction

Understanding the parts of the guitar is an important first step for every beginner. When you know the names and purposes of each part, you'll be able to follow lessons more easily, communicate with other musicians, and better understand how the instrument works.


In this guide, we'll break down the major parts of both acoustic and electric guitars and explain what each component does.


The Main Sections of the Guitar


A guitar is typically divided into three main sections:

  1. The Headstock

  2. The Neck

  3. The Body


Each section plays an important role in how the guitar feels, functions, and produces sound.


The Headstock

Nut

The Neck

When you press a string behind a fret, you shorten the vibrating length of the string, which raises the pitch.


For example:

  • Open string = longest vibrating length

  • Higher fret = shorter vibrating length and higher pitch


The frets allow guitarists to play specific notes accurately.


Inlays (Fret Markers)

Inlays, also called fret markers, are visual reference points on the fretboard that make it easier to find your position on the guitar neck. They help guitarists navigate the fretboard more quickly, especially when shifting to higher frets.

  • 3rd fret

  • 5th fret

  • 7th fret

  • 9th fret

The 12th fret is especially important because it marks the halfway point of the string length and repeats the same notes one octave higher. This is why there are sometimes two inlays on the 12th fret instead of one like on the other frets.


Truss Rod


Inside most guitar necks is a metal rod called a truss rod.


The truss rod helps control the amount of curve in the neck.


Changes in temperature, humidity, and string tension can affect the neck, and the truss rod allows adjustments to maintain proper playability.


The Body of the Guitar

Pickups

Pickguard
